What Is the Correct Tire Pressure for a Semi-Truck?

Ask ten drivers what pressure they run in their commercial truck tires and you may get ten different answers.

Some will say:

“I always run 100 PSI.”

Others will say:

“Put 110 in everything.”

But commercial tire inflation should not be based on habit alone.

The proper tire pressure depends on the tire, the load being carried, the wheel position, the vehicle, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

There Is No Universal Semi-Truck Tire PSI

Commercial truck tires are designed to carry specific loads at specific inflation pressures.

The correct pressure for a steer tire may be different from the correct pressure for a drive or trailer tire.

Likewise, the correct pressure for a lightly loaded vehicle may differ from the pressure required when the same tire is carrying a heavier load.

That is why fleet tire-pressure programs should be based on actual equipment requirements rather than one arbitrary PSI number.

1. Start With the Tire Manufacturer’s Load and Inflation Tables

Commercial tire manufacturers publish load and inflation information for their tires.

These tables help determine how much pressure is needed to support a particular load.

Fleet managers should consider:

  • Tire size

  • Load range

  • Single or dual configuration

  • Actual axle weights

  • Manufacturer specifications

The goal is to provide enough inflation pressure to safely carry the load without simply assuming more pressure is always better.

2. Know the Actual Axle Weight

One of the most useful pieces of information in a tire-pressure program is the actual weight each axle is carrying.

A truck may have:

  • A steer axle

  • Drive axles

  • Trailer axles

Each axle may carry a different amount of weight.

If you know the actual axle weights, you can compare them with the tire manufacturer’s load/inflation information and establish an appropriate fleet pressure policy.

3. Steer, Drive, and Trailer Tires Do Different Jobs

Steer Tires

Steer tires support the front of the tractor and directly affect steering and vehicle control.

Because steer-axle loads can vary significantly between trucks, tractors, equipment configurations, and applications, inflation should be matched to the tire and axle requirements.

Drive Tires

Drive tires carry substantial weight while transferring engine torque to the road.

Dual drive assemblies also need consistent inflation between paired tires.

Trailer Tires

Trailer tires sometimes receive less attention because they are behind the tractor, but improper inflation can lead to:

  • Excessive heat

  • Irregular wear

  • Increased rolling resistance

  • Casing damage

  • Roadside failures

Every wheel position deserves proper pressure management.

4. Check Tire Pressure When the Tires Are Cold

Tire pressure rises as tires heat up during operation.

That means pressure measurements taken after a truck has been running can be higher than the pressure measured before the trip.

For consistent fleet maintenance, tire pressure should normally be checked when the tires are cold—before significant driving has heated them.

Do not automatically release pressure from a properly inflated hot tire simply because the reading has increased during normal operation.

5. Why Underinflation Is Expensive

Running a commercial tire below the pressure needed for the load can increase tire flex and heat buildup.

Potential consequences include:

  • Faster tire wear

  • Shoulder wear

  • Increased rolling resistance

  • Reduced fuel efficiency

  • Casing damage

  • Greater risk of tire failure

  • Shorter tire life

For fleets, chronic underinflation can quietly increase tire and fuel costs across dozens or hundreds of vehicles.

6. More PSI Is Not Automatically Better

If low pressure is bad, it can be tempting to assume that more pressure must always be better.

Not necessarily.

Excessive inflation for the load and application can change the tire’s road contact and may contribute to:

  • Irregular wear

  • Harsher ride

  • Reduced ability to absorb road impacts

  • Premature wear in certain applications

The goal is not maximum pressure.

The goal is appropriate pressure for the tire and the load.

7. Pay Attention to Wheel Limits

The tire is not the only component that matters.

Commercial wheels also have load and pressure ratings.

The tire pressure used should remain within the limits specified for the complete wheel-and-tire assembly.

Never assume that because a tire is capable of a certain pressure, every wheel used with that tire is rated for the same pressure.

8. Dual Tires Need Consistent Pressure

Dual tires work together as a pair.

If one tire is significantly lower in pressure than the other, the properly inflated tire may end up carrying more of the load.

This can contribute to:

  • Uneven tire loading

  • Increased heat

  • Irregular wear

  • Casing stress

  • Premature failure

Dual tires should be inspected individually.

Looking at them from across the parking lot is not a pressure check.

9. Do Not Judge Tire Pressure by Appearance

Commercial truck tires can be significantly underinflated without looking obviously flat.

This is especially true with dual tires.

A pressure gauge or properly maintained tire-pressure monitoring system provides much better information than a visual inspection alone.

10. Establish a Fleet Pressure Standard

Every fleet should have a documented tire-pressure policy.

That policy should consider:

  • Equipment type

  • Tire size

  • Normal axle weights

  • Tire position

  • Manufacturer specifications

  • Seasonal temperature changes

  • Operating environment

Once an appropriate pressure has been established, drivers and technicians have a consistent target instead of guessing.

Temperature Matters Too

Outside temperature can affect tire pressure.

As ambient temperatures change, tire pressure may change even when the tire has no leak.

That makes seasonal pressure checks especially important during major weather changes.

In North Texas, that can mean checking pressures carefully when temperatures swing from hot afternoons to much cooler mornings.

The Bigger Fleet Lesson

Tire pressure sounds like a small maintenance item.

Across an entire fleet, it is not.

Good inflation management can help improve:

  • Tire life

  • Fuel efficiency

  • Casing condition

  • Vehicle reliability

  • Tire wear

  • Fleet uptime

A few minutes with a pressure gauge can be worth a lot more than it looks.
