One of the most common questions commercial truck owners and fleet managers ask is:
How long should a commercial truck tire last?
There is no single mileage number that applies to every commercial tire.
A tire running long-haul highway miles under a well-maintained tractor may experience completely different conditions than a tire operating on construction sites, urban delivery routes, warehouses, or local stop-and-go applications.
Instead of relying on mileage alone, commercial fleets should evaluate several factors.
1. Tread Depth
Tread condition is one of the most important factors when deciding whether a commercial tire should remain in service.
As tread wears down, the tire may have less ability to:
Maintain traction
Channel water
Perform in poor weather
Handle demanding operating conditions
Drivers and maintenance teams should monitor tread depth regularly rather than waiting until the tire appears completely worn out.
2. Uneven Tire Wear
A tire can still have tread remaining and need attention because it is wearing unevenly.
Watch for:
One-sided wear
Shoulder wear
Center wear
Feathering
Cupping
Irregular wear between dual tires
Uneven wear may indicate another problem such as inflation, alignment, suspension, loading, or wheel issues.
Replacing the tire without finding the cause may result in the replacement tire developing the same problem.

A tire with significant structural damage may need replacement even when plenty of tread remains.
5. Tire Pressure History
A tire that has repeatedly operated underinflated may experience internal stress and heat buildup.
That damage may not always be obvious from the outside.
This is one reason tire pressure should be treated as part of the fleet's maintenance program rather than something checked only when a tire looks low.
6. Operating Environment
Two identical tires can have very different service lives depending on where they operate.
Long-Haul Highway
Steady highway operation may produce relatively consistent tread wear when inflation, alignment, and loading are properly maintained.
Local Delivery
Frequent stopping, turning, backing, and maneuvering can accelerate certain wear patterns.
Construction and Job Sites
Rocks, debris, uneven surfaces, mud, curbs, and sharp objects can increase the likelihood of tire damage.
Urban Routes
Constant turns, braking, curb contact, and stop-and-go operation can create additional tire stress.
7. Wheel Position Matters
Commercial tires perform different jobs depending on where they are installed.
Steer Tires
Steer tires directly affect steering and vehicle control and deserve careful, frequent inspection.
Drive Tires
Drive tires must provide traction while handling torque and heavy loads.
Trailer Tires
Trailer tires can sometimes receive less attention than tractor tires, but they still require consistent pressure, tread, sidewall, and dual-matching inspections.
Every wheel position should be evaluated according to its application and condition.
